Nursing

Course eligibility is based on an application being submitted from the employer on the your behalf. Long term care facilities recommend State Registered Nurse Aides for the KMA course based on attitude, interest, and sense of responsibility. 

Applicants must be currently employed as a State Registered Nurse Aide and have at least six months work experience within the last two years. 

You are not permitted to enroll into this course without this application submitted on your behalf. 

In addition to the application, SKYCTC requires official copies of high school transcripts or GEDs. 

Information pertaining to the course is sent to all long-term care facilities in Region IV (via email) over the summer.

Nursing Assistant Skills (NAA 100) course is the 75-hour training course required to become a State Registered Nurse Aide.

Upon successful completion of the lecture component with a grade of C or better, you will then complete the clinical component.

Please note that this course is mandated to have 75 contact hours. You are not permitted to miss more than four hours of class time. There is a make-up day scheduled between lecture and clinicals for you to make up any time, four hours or less, that was missed. Please note that absences on clinical days are not permitted. Failure to attend a clinical day will result in failure of the course.

You must earn a final grade of C or better to be eligible to take the State Registered Nurse Aide exam.

1. Apply to SKYCTC.
2. Submit official transcript (high school and postsecondary work completed at other institutions).
3. Qualifying placement scores or completion of required developmental courses.
4. Proof of active status on the Kentucky Medicaid Nurse Aide Registry.
5. Attend mandatory nursing orientation to complete nursing admission application.
6. Take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Exam for pre-admission.

• Above average standing in high school or on the GED
• ACT composite score of 20 or its equivalent on a nationally-normed preadmission assessment
• Completion of 12 or more credit hours in the approved curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better from any regionally accredited college
• Applicants with high TEAS Exam scores
• First time applicants

Progression in the Nursing program is contingent upon achievement of a grade of C or better in each course and maintenance of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or better (on a 4.0 scale).

Note: The Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) may deny a nursing graduate admission to the NCLEX-PN or NCLEX-RN Exam if an individual has been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony that involves acts that bear directly on the qualifications of the graduate to practice nursing.

Upon acceptance into the program, students will be required to provide the following documentation:

• Physical Examination
• Immunization records
• Tuberculin (TB) skin test - Annually
• TB Risk Assessment - Annually
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR)
• Criminal background check - Annually
• Drug screening - Annually

Prerequisites for Admissions

• Medical Terminology
• Human Anatomy & Physiology I (with lab) OR BIO 135 Basic Anatomy & Physiology
• Writing I
• Medicaid Nurse Aide OR Active Status on Registry

All prerequisites must be complete with a grade of C or better prior to the May 15th application deadline.

There are two entities that can schedule an online test.

• An approved Kentucky Nurse Aide Training Provider, and
• An individual that needs to schedule their own retake exam

Nurse Aide Training Providers

Approved KY Nurse Aide Training Providers are required to schedule their employees/students to test.  Retakes may be scheduled as well. 

Individual Retakes

An individual may schedule their own retake exam(s).  During this period of transition between the paper/pencil testing and the online testing, you will need to contact a nurse aide coordinator to obtain a retake code to the system.

When arriving at the test site, you will be required to provide the following documents at every test appointment: 

• An unexpired state or federal issued photo identification
• A non-laminated Social Security card

If you fail to bring both items, you will not be permitted to test.

**Please note that testing may take several hours.  

1. Each candidate is to be at the test location and ready to begin the test by the starting time. A candidate arriving late may be considered a “no-show”.
2. Only the candidates who are on the official roster will be allowed to take the written and/or performance test(s).
3. When arriving at the test site, candidates will be required to provide the following documents at every test appointment:
   • An unexpired state or federal issued photo identification
   • A non-laminated Social Security card
4. Test related materials that are needed will be supplied. Candidates are NOT allowed to bring reference materials, etc. into the test room or holding room. Candidates cannot use or use any notes, or other types of references during the test.
5. No supplied test materials, documents, or notes of any kind may be removed from the examination room.
6. Any candidate observed giving or receiving assistance of any kind during the test will be dismissed and their test results will be declared null and void.
7. Cell phones are required to be off and put away while testing. Any candidate observed using a cell phone in the written test area, performance test area, holding room, or any other designated testing area will be dismissed, and their test results will be declared null and void.
8. Test candidates are to exhibit professional behavior at all times. Any candidate behavior that is deemed disruptive to the testing process will be dismissed and their test results will be declared null and void. 
9. Electronic translating dictionaries are not allowed for use during testing. Hard copy translating dictionaries will be reviewed. Any dictionaries with hand-written notes will not be allowed for use during testing. 
10. Fitbits, Apple watches, and all similar wearable electronic devices are required to be removed prior to testing. Any candidate observed using a wearable electronic device in any designated testing area will be dismissed and their test results will be declared null and void.
